Basketry is one of the oldest and most widespread crafts in Slovenia, and the Otip narave handbook was prepared with the aim of rekindling readers’ enthusiasm for this ancient craft and encouraging its revival in the broader Slovenian community.
The authors collaborated with basketry masters from different parts of Slovenia to include numerous traditional weaving techniques from the Kras region, all the way to Bela krajina and Prekmurje regions.
The handbook is divided into five sections, each describing the weaving processes using various materials such as willow, rattan, lichen, straw, and rush.
With the help of clear instructions and visual materials, you can try your hand at creating 25 different products, including various types of baskets, lanterns, lichen bags, straw cups, woven bottles, Karst-style trays and baskets, bird feeders, straw Christmas decorations, and much more.
You can start with the labeled, simpler techniques, which are also suitable for children, and then progress to more advanced ones. Additionally, you will learn where to find basketry materials, how to gather and prepare them, and what tools you will need.
